My first river cruise was along the Rhône River in southern France, and it completely changed the way I think about travel. Highlights included exploring Roman ruins and Van Gogh’s haunts in Arles, marveling at Cézanne’s work projected across a quarry, and standing beneath the ancient arches of the Pont du Gard, one of the most impressive Roman aqueducts in Europe. I rode a steam train through the hills, toured a winery (of course!), and even visited a truffle farm with a truffle-sniffing dog — one of the most charming excursions I’ve ever experienced.

We ended in Lyon, where a vibrant food scene and a local cheese tasting gave me an even deeper appreciation for French culture.
