My time in Hoi An, Vietnam was filled with color, culture, and some of the most delicious food I’ve ever tasted. This UNESCO-listed town blends ancient temples, French colonial architecture, and lantern-lit alleyways, all tucked beside a peaceful river and surrounded by lush tropical landscapes.

Hoi An is a feast for the senses — from fragrant street food, to local performers dancing on bamboo poles at a small purpose-built theater, to soft evening light reflecting off the Thu Bon River. I wandered through bustling markets, admired traditional tailoring shops, and visited My Son Sanctuary, a hauntingly beautiful site of ancient Hindu temples that reflect the deep spiritual history of the region. I was especially captivated by a performance of traditional Shiva dancers, set on a simple stage among the ruins.

One of the most memorable days started on a small, local boat along the Hoai River. Our bikes were loaded onboard and ferried across to the countryside near Minh An. From there, we pedaled past rice fields being harvested by hand, waved to women collecting small squid from the shallows, and stopped to watch brightly dyed sleeping mats being woven from river reeds. It felt like pedaling straight into a living storybook.
