Virgin VoyagesAbout Me
Let me be straight with you: I didn't expect to love Virgin Voyages as much as I do. I've been on traditional cruises. I know the buffet lines, the crowded pool decks, the shows that are fine but forgettable. Then I boarded the Scarlet Lady out of Miami and everything I thought I knew about cruising changed.
Virgin Voyages doesn't do passengers — they do Sailors. And that distinction matters, because everything about the experience is built differently from the ground up.
What Makes Virgin Voyages Different
No kids. Ever. Virgin Voyages is adults-only across their entire fleet — the Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady. If you've ever wanted to cruise without the chaos of a floating theme park, this is it.
No buffets. Instead, you get 20+ eateries included in your fare — real restaurants with mood lighting, actual menus, and food that would hold its own in any major city. Pink Agave for Mexican. Extra Virgin for Italian. Razzle Dazzle for the best plant-based options at sea. Test Kitchen if you want something genuinely unexpected.
No nickel-and-diming on the things that matter most. Wi-Fi, group fitness classes, and basic beverages are all included. What you'll pay separately for: alcohol (handled through Virgin's Bar Tab system — prepaid drink credit that earns you bonus Sailor Loot), Shore Things (their term for excursions), gratuities, and any premium add-ons. It's still significantly more inclusive than a traditional cruise — just know what's in and what's out before you budget.
What I Help With
I sailed the Dominican Daze itinerary on Scarlet Lady — 5 nights out of Miami hitting Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Virgin's private Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas. I booked the XL Sea Terrace, which comes with a gorgeous red hammock on the balcony handwoven by artisan women in Thailand through Yellow Leaf Hammocks. I spent an embarrassing amount of time in that hammock. Zero regrets.
Here's what I actually know from sailing it:
- Cabin selection matters. Not every XL Sea Terrace has a hammock — specific cabins near the bow have metal railings instead of glass. I know which ones to avoid and I'll make sure yours is confirmed before you book.
- Book your Shore Things early. They open 120 days before sailing and the good ones sell out. I'll flag the deadlines so you don't miss out.
- Duel Reality (The Romeo & Juliet show in the Red Room) is not optional. Best live entertainment I've seen at sea — not "good for a cruise," just genuinely good. The send-off party sets the tone. Don't be in your cabin when it happens.
- The Beach Club at Bimini delivers. Lagoon pool, crystal clear water, a DJ flotilla party in the afternoon, and a sunset that makes you immediately start planning your next sailing.
Who Virgin Voyages Is For
Adults who want something better than the standard cruise experience. People who've cruised before and felt like something was missing. First-timers who are nervous about cruising and want to start somewhere that actually feels like a boutique hotel at sea. Couples, friend groups, solo travelers — Virgin's vibe is inclusive, fun, and genuinely cool without trying too hard.I'll also say this as a mom: I have sailed traditional cruise lines with my kids. It was fine. It was also crowded, loud, and not particularly relaxing for anyone involved. Sailing adults-only is a completely different experience — and I say that with full love for my children. Sometimes the best trip you can take is the one where you actually get to decompress. Virgin Voyages exists for exactly that.
Who It's Not For
Families with kids — that's the whole point. Anyone who needs a traditional cruise structure. People who want a massive ship with every possible amenity — Virgin's Lady Ships are midsize by design and that's intentional.
I'll tell you both. That's how I work.
