Why I Became a Travel Stylist

 As a kid, travel meant packing up the car for camping trips and driving across Canada with my family. Those road trips gave me my first taste of adventure the wide-open spaces, the laughter around campfires, and the thrill of discovering something new just beyond the next bend. And every Tuesday night, I was glued to The Love Boat, imagining myself sailing away with the crew. Long before I set foot on my first cruise ship, I was already dreaming of a life at sea.

As I grew older, travel became my language of connection. It’s where I’ve celebrated milestones, found inspiration, and created memories that shaped who I am. For me, it has never been just about a destination it’s about how it makes you feel.

But my journey into travel didn’t begin with passports and cruise ships. It began with a pair of scissors and a salon called New Attitudes. For over 25 years, I worked as a hairstylist and salon owner, and it was in that space that I learned my most important lesson: it was never just about the haircut. It was about listening, noticing the little things, and creating an experience that left each guest feeling seen, cared for, and confident.

That “client-first” philosophy guided every chapter of my professional life. Alongside running the salon, I helped manage our family’s electrical contracting business, home schooled our son, taught first aid, and later spent 10 years as an expat in Cuenca, Ecuador. Each role taught me balance, adaptability, and the art of putting people at the centre of every experience.

When I became a Travel Advisor, it felt like a natural extension of who I already was. Just like in the salon, I don’t just plan trips I style journeys. That’s why I call myself a Travel Stylist. Because travel isn’t about transactions; it’s about transformation.

For me, travel styling means blending soft adventures with luxury touches. It’s knowing when rustic authenticity brings your heart alive, and when indulgence makes the experience unforgettable. Sometimes it’s a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti followed by champagne in the bush. Other times, it’s a rail journey through Europe with days spent exploring storybook villages and nights in five-star hotels. Or it’s a family cruise where every single detail flights, transfers, excursions, dining reservations is handled so parents can simply enjoy being present.This unique mix of rustic and refined is what my clients love most. They don’t just want a vacation they want an escape that feels effortless, personal, adventurous, indulgent, and completely stress-free.

Over the years, I’ve sailed on more than 40 cruises, ballooned over some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes, explored Europe, the Middle East, South America, and North America, and lived abroad long enough to truly understand what it means to immerse in a culture. These experiences allow me to style journeys with both practical insight and a personal touch.

The most rewarding part? Hearing a client say, “That was exactly what we needed,” or “I didn’t have to worry about a thing.” That’s when I know I’ve done my job not just as a Travel Advisor, but as a Travel Stylist.
