Ecuador holds a special place in my heart. What began as a family adventure with my husband Keith and our then 15-year-old son Mavrick grew into a decade of discovery, connection, and transformation. It’s a country that welcomed us with open arms, taught us to slow down, and ultimately became a cherished part of our family story.

We lived part-time in Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage city nestled high in the Andes. Over the years, Cuenca became our second home a city of cobblestone streets, colonial charm, and warm-hearted locals who welcomed us as family. We discovered hidden cafés, strolled along the Río Tomebamba, and spent lazy Sunday afternoons listening to music in the flower-filled plazas. Life there had its own rhythm slower, more intentional, and filled with moments that reminded us how travel can change you from the inside out.

Our family explored Ecuador from every angle. We wandered the colourful markets of Otavalo, where artisans display intricate weavings and nearby Cotacachi is renowned for its finely crafted leather goods. We soaked in the rejuvenating hot springs of Baños, watched the mist roll through the Mindo cloud forest, and stood in awe before the snow-capped peaks along the Avenue of the Volcanoes. From the lively streets of Quito to the serene lakes of Laguna Quilotoa, every journey deepened our connection to the people and places that make Ecuador so extraordinary.

The Galápagos Islands were the crown jewel of our time in Ecuador. Standing on the black lava shores of Española Island, watching sea lions bask beside blue-footed boobies, I understood why Darwin was forever changed by this remarkable place. The Galápagos are pure magic untamed, serene, and deeply humbling. Every visit is a reminder of nature’s power and balance, a sanctuary where travellers can disconnect from the world and reconnect with wonder.

Living in Ecuador taught us to savour, to connect, and to appreciate travel as more than movement  it’s transformation. It gave me a true understanding of what authentic travel feels like: immersive, personal, and unforgettable.
