South America: The Land of Dreams

South America is never far from my thoughts. Although I’ve been there many times, I am always eager to get back and explore something new or revisit a favorite. I can’t get enough of the delectable meals to be found in Lima’s world renowned food scene and endless supply of amazing restaurants. And I could walk for hours along the boulevards of Buenos Aires window shopping or enjoying a coffee on the sidewalk where you would swear you were in Paris.

South America is an outdoor playground for all sorts of adventure. The first time I went to Patagonia, I got to hike on the Perito Moreno Glacier. Surrounded by the white ice peaks and azure blue pools of melting water is indescribable. The next time I went to Patagonia, we went hiking in the Tierra del Fuego National Park surrounded by majestic fjords. Then I hopped aboard a luxury cruise to Antarctica which was epic!

I’ve  walked in the pine forests that dot the mountain sides of Bariloche, a gorgeous ski resort in Argentina that is just as beautiful in the summer. No wonder Bariloche is known as the Switzerland of South America. I’ve traipsed through the rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon and sipped water from a water vine that I hacked myself. And there is no bigger thrill than catch-and-release piranha fishing! I also love to send clients to experience the wonders of Iguazu Falls from Brazil. The first time I was there, I was blown away. It will change you forever.

One of the most strenuous and exhilarating things I’ve ever done is hike up Huayna Picchu. That’s the peak behind Macchu Picchu you see in all the pictures. It’s not for the faint at heart! You are literally hiking in the clouds hanging off the side of the mountain. At the top, you are rewarded with a view of the valley and can take a much needed rest among the ruins while picturing the Peruvians who called it home (which is seriously hard to imagine).

If beaches are your thing, South America is the perfect destination. You could head to Rio but you could head north to Pipa Beach in Brazil where the locals go to live it up in the summer. Or go to Uruguay, a sparsely populated country with the most incredible slow-food scene, burgeoning wine region and mile after mile of coastal towns. Uruguay is home to Punta del Este (think a smaller Miami Beach resort town) and Jose Ignacio, the low-key village with its sandy roads, elegant restaurants and chichi boutiques that cater to Hollywood movie stars.

You really can’t go wrong with a trip to South America. It can be an intimidating destination to plan but that is something that I am an expert in.
