About Me

River Cruises are the relaxed way to see Europe
River Cruises are the relaxed way to see Europe

River cruising is one of the most efficient ways to see the interior of a continent. You unpack once and the hotel moves with you. The problem is that the market is flooded with options that look identical on paper, and they are not. The difference between AmaWaterways, Tauck, and Viking is significant, and so is the difference between a cabin facing the port town and one facing an industrial dock. I sort all of that before you book.

The truth about water levels
This is the main risk the brochures do not mention. The Rhine and the Danube are natural rivers, not theme park rides. High water stops ships from passing under bridges. Low water stops them from sailing at all. I advise on the safest months to minimize this risk, and if a disruption happens mid-trip, I work directly with the cruise line to handle the logistics before it reaches you.

Christmas markets
The Christmas markets in Germany and Austria are a major draw, but the logistics are tighter than most people expect. Nuremberg and Vienna get crowded fast. The timing makes a real difference: late November gives you the full atmosphere with manageable crowds, while mid-December puts you in the thick of it. I help you find the right window for your group.

Access to the city center
Ocean liners dock at industrial ports. River ships dock in the center of town. You walk off the gangway into the medieval squares of Passau or the vineyards outside Lyon. I build pre-cruise and post-cruise extensions around the stops that deserve more time, and arrange private drivers to take you deeper into the countryside before you are back on board for dinner.

Wine and culinary themes
The Bordeaux and Douro Valley itineraries are built for people who care about food and wine as much as the scenery. I secure tables at local restaurants in port so you are eating in the region, not just passing through it on the ship's dining schedule.

Beyond Europe: The Mekong
The Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia is a different kind of river cruise entirely, and it solves a real problem: seeing Southeast Asia without the chaos of overland travel. I work with AmaWaterways and Uniworld in these regions because they own their ground infrastructure, which means the hygiene and safety standards hold up even in remote areas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How do I choose between the Rhine and the Danube?
A: It depends on your interests. The Rhine is about castles and vertical vineyards. It is industrial but dramatic. The Danube is about empire and palaces. First-timers often prefer the Danube for the visual scale of arriving in Budapest at night.

Q: How far in advance should I book a river cruise?
A:
Six to twelve months for peak season sailings, especially Christmas market itineraries and summer Danube or Rhine departures. The better cabin categories on smaller ships go first. Shoulder season offers more flexibility, and I often find stronger value in April, May, and October.

Q: What is the right river cruise for a first-timer?
A:
The Danube from Budapest to Passau is the one I recommend most for a first trip. The cities are walkable from the ship, the scenery changes daily, and arriving in Budapest at night is the kind of moment that sells people on river cruising permanently.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
