Dubai, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.)

The United Arab Emirates is one of the easier international trips to pull off, and that tends to surprise people who expect it to feel complicated. The country puts you in a place where English is the working language, hotels are excellent, and two very different experiences sit about an hour apart. My job is figuring out which combination is right for you and building a trip to Dubai and Abu Dhabi that holds.

WHAT A UAE TRIP ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE FOR DIFFERENT TRAVELERS

Here are some examples of who tends to book the United Arab Emirates, and what those trips look like:

• Families who want a real vacation: A Dubai luxury stay with kids works because the city delivers for every age. Atlantis The Royal has one of the best waterparks in the world built in. The Four Seasons at Jumeirah Beach is calmer with solid kids programming. The experience that surprises families most is the desert evening. Head out to the dunes, watch the sun go down, have dinner under the stars. As simple as that sounds, it tends to be what everyone talks about on the flight home.
  
  
• Couples who want the desert, not another beach: Al Maha Desert Resort is about an hour south of Dubai inside a wildlife conservation area, with standalone villas and private plunge pools facing the dunes. Qasr Al Sarab is further toward Abu Dhabi, more remote and quieter in a way that feels completely different from city life. Both book up fast and reward having someone who knows the inventory.
  
  
• First-timers who want to hit the highlights: If this is your first time, you are probably thinking Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and that is the right starting point. Where a trip to Dubai goes sideways is the pacing. Abu Dhabi deserves at least one overnight. The Museum of the Future belongs on any first itinerary.
  
  
• Professionals adding a few leisure days: DIFC has the best hotels for business travelers. Four Seasons DIFC and Waldorf Astoria DIFC are both excellent, and getting from a morning meeting to a Jumeirah beach club is easy. One free day can cover Alserkal Avenue, a walk through Al Fahidi, and still make a late flight.

HOW I APPROACH DUBAI & ABU DHABI VACATIONS A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY

Planning Emirates vacations well is about more than finding good hotels online. My supplier relationships across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah mean clients regularly get upgrades, early check-ins, and contacts on-property who know we are coming. I work with local specialists who understand each emirate, because Abu Dhabi genuinely feels different from Dubai. For clients who need privacy or have a complicated schedule, that is part of the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is the best time of year to visit the United Arab Emirates?
A: October through April is the window most people aim for. Temperatures are comfortable, activities are enjoyable, and most major events fall in this stretch. Summer is hot, but resort-based itineraries or combinations with somewhere cooler can still work.

Q: Are there cultural customs American travelers should know about?
A: A few practical things. Dress modestly in malls, souks, and mosques. Public displays of affection are fine on resort grounds but not in public. Alcohol is available at hotels and licensed restaurants. If your trip falls during Ramadan, some restaurants close during the day. I go over this before departure.

Q: Is it worth adding another destination to the trip?
A: Most people who combine the UAE with something else are glad they did. The Maldives is the most popular add-on for couples since the flight is short and the contrast is total. Families often do well adding Jordan, especially Petra and Wadi Rum. Oman is worth considering if you want something less built-up and more rooted in the region.
