About Me

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik, Croatia

Croatia sat under the radar for years until Game of Thrones rewrote the travel map overnight. The crowds followed, but the country has held onto what made it worth visiting in the first place. The coastline, the old towns, and the national parks all deliver. Travel to Croatia is one of the better decisions you can make for a Mediterranean trip. If you want help putting together a trip that actually fits how you travel, that's exactly what I do.

IF YOU'RE PLANNING A TRIP TO CROATIA, HERE'S WHERE TO START

Different people come to Croatia for very different reasons. Here's what the planning looks like for a few of the most common ones.

  • Couples Celebrating a Milestone: If a milestone trip is what you're after, Croatia has a way of making it feel earned. A week on a luxury yacht charter in Croatia gets you from Dubrovnik up to Hvar without standing in a tourist queue. Or if you'd rather be planted somewhere beautiful, a stone villa in Istria with a private chef and good local wine is a genuinely different experience from a hotel. These trips take real planning to get right, and that's the point.

  • Families Ready for an Adventure: Families do well here. Kids who walk through Diocletian's Palace in Split, a working city built around a Roman emperor's retirement home, tend to actually remember it. Resorts like Sun Gardens in Dubrovnik or Falkensteiner Iadera near Zadar have the room sizes and programming that make the whole trip work for everyone. Late June is the sweet spot, before the full summer push.

  • Active Travelers and Adventure Seekers: If you need to be doing something, the Adriatic is well set up for it. Sea kayaking the Elaphiti Islands is a completely different way to see the water around Dubrovnik. Hiking the Biokovo ridge puts the Makarska coast spread out below you. Which base you start from shapes everything.

  • Blending Work and Travel: Croatia introduced its digital nomad visa a few years back, and Split and Zadar have become genuinely practical cities for a longer working stay. The time difference suits east-coast U.S. schedules well, and apartment quality in older stone buildings is better than most expect. For anyone planning a trip to Croatia around remote work, May, September, and October are the right months.

WHAT A CROATIA TRAVEL AGENT ACTUALLY DOES FOR YOU

Most of the value I add is invisible by the time you're on the ground. I work directly with operators across Dalmatia and Istria, which means placing clients at the right property during the right window, not guessing at what the season looks like. For luxury Adriatic cruises, I start by matching the vessel to the trip: a refitted gulet for clients who want to slow down and stay close to shore, or a crewed motor yacht for those who want more ground covered each day. Clients with complex logistics, multiple overlapping itineraries, or situations requiring real discretion are a regular part of my practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: When is the right time to go, and how do you avoid the summer crowds?
A: July and August are rough in certain spots, especially Dubrovnik's Old Town. May through early June and all of September give you almost everything summer offers without the density. I'll tell you upfront if a specific routing during peak season needs adjusting.

Q: What's the best way to get between the islands?
A: The main Jadrolinija ferry network handles most routes, but schedules thin out outside of high season. For tighter connections or smaller island stops, catamarans and boat transfers are the more reliable option.

Q: Does Croatia work well as part of a bigger trip?
A: It does. Slovenia pairs naturally, and a few days in Ljubljana before heading south makes for a strong opening. Montenegro's Bay of Kotor is worth the detour if you're going south of Dubrovnik.

A perfect Mallorca experience
Reviewed By Makis S. - Deerfield, IL | Traveled to Balearic Islands ~ Spain ~ Europe
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!
I would recommend this agent to my family and friends.

Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Trip of a lifetime!
Reviewed By Nancy P. - Arlington Heights, IL | Traveled to Europe
My husband and I planned an ambitious European trip and Steven made it happen. He was able to take our wishes and plan an itinerary which we thoroughly enjoyed. He worked with us as we fine tuned our plans, gave us options to choose from, and answered all of our questions. We were grateful that prior to our trip he checked in to be sure we had taken care of the items we needed to handle. During our trip we experienced a train delay which caused us to miss a connecting train and Steven was able to give us guidance so we could reach our destination. It was a pleasure to work with Steven, he showed real interest in our plans, and checked in once we returned. Thanks Steven!

The balance was perfect; a fantastic mix of planned activities and personal time to explore. The meetings to pre-plan the trip were concise, helpful and relevant. Lots of great moments. Petra and Bethany by the Jordan were both highlights. It exceeded my expectations.

Patagonia anniversary success
Steve was great to work with. We planned our trip in late January for November, and he guided us through it all and stayed on top of it following up with us in the fall and even checked in on the trip and after. It was great to have an expert who has traveled there really give us his recommendations. He nailed the whole trip out of the park and was one of the best life changing vacations we have taken. It was extra special because we celebrated our 20th anniversary.
