Have you ever been to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), Mexico? My husband and I recently took a trip there. We absolutely love Mexico—not just for its beautiful beaches and incredible food but also for how easy it is to get there from the DFW area. Unlike Cancun, Puerto Vallarta offers more than just stunning beaches—it’s also home to breathtaking mountains and lush jungle landscapes.
While there are some all-inclusive resorts, they are far fewer than in Cancun, which means there are more opportunities to stay in a condo or boutique hotel. This allows travelers to immerse themselves in the local culture and experience the city in a more authentic way.
One of the biggest differences we noticed compared to Cancun was how walkable and safe downtown Puerto Vallarta is. A must-do experience is strolling the Malecón, a scenic boardwalk along the ocean lined with shops, restaurants, and street performers. It’s the perfect place to take in the local energy and enjoy breathtaking sunsets.
During our visit, we took a guided tour with a local expert, who shared fascinating insights about the city’s history—from its founding to its unique art scene. We learned about Manuel Lepe, a beloved Mexican painter famous for his colorful, childlike depictions of Puerto Vallarta’s landscapes. His artwork is displayed throughout the city, bringing its charm to life. Our tour also took us to Casa Kimberly, the former home of Elizabeth Taylor, and to the iconic Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the city’s most famous church.
Another unforgettable experience was taking a traditional Mexican cooking class, where we learned how to make mole. This rich, flavorful sauce is typically served over chicken, turkey, or pork, paired with rice and tortillas. With its blend of indigenous and Spanish influences, mole is a true taste of Mexico’s deep culinary traditions.
We had an amazing trip and are already looking forward to returning to explore even more of the nearby towns and hidden gems. If you’ve never been to Puerto Vallarta, I highly recommend adding it to your travel list—you won’t be disappointed!
