DAY 1 — Eastern Kyoto Icons & the Timeless Charm of Gion
Start your day early at Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is one of Kyoto’s most recognizable sights, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the forested hillside. Tip: There will be fewer crowds the farther up the mountain you go. Next, make your way to Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic wooden hall built without nails, with panoramic views over Kyoto. Walk downhill through Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka (preserved stone-paved streets lined with traditional shops) and Ishibe-koji Alley (a quiet, lantern-lit lane often missed by visitors). Continue by walking toward Gion (the famous Geisha district), passing through Yasaka Shrine. Next go to Shirakawa Canal (enter near Gion Shinbashi and walk north). This narrow canal is lined with willow trees and traditional teahouses is one of Kyoto’s most photogenic yet peaceful walks. For dinner, head to one of the many restaurants lining Pontocho Alley.

DAY 2 — Arashiyama Nature & Zen Kyoto
Start your day as early as possible at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Here towering bamboo stalks sway overhead, creating a tranquil, otherworldly atmosphere. Next head to the less-well-known Okochi Sanso Villa which offers meticulously landscaped gardens, sweeping views, and a peaceful teahouse. Next go to either Tenryu-ji (UNESCO-listed Zen temple with one of Kyoto’s finest landscape gardens) or the less popular Gio-ji, a small, secluded, moss-covered temple. Walk south into Arashiyama for lunch. After lunch take a taxi to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a striking gold-leaf-covered pavilion reflected in a tranquil pond. The visit is short and efficient but visually unforgettable. Head off the beaten path and visit Daitoku-ji Zen Temple Complex next. A large, peaceful complex containing multiple sub-temples known for dry rock gardens and Zen aesthetics. Visit the Daisen-in sub-temple to see a classic Zen garden or Ryogen-in for an intimate and serene experience.

DAY 3 — Philosophy, Heian Shrine & Kyoto Crafts
Start your morning at Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), which exemplifies Zen aesthetics with moss gardens and a raked sand courtyard. Walk south along the Philosopher's Path stopping at Honen-in and Otoyo Shrine along the way. Make your way to Heian Shrine, which is marked by one of Japan’s largest torii gates and offers expansive grounds and a beautiful garden with ponds and seasonal blooms. Eat lunch in the nearby Okazaki Area and then head to the Kyoto Handicraft Center which offers high-quality local crafts, including textiles, ceramics, fans, and souvenirs - ideal for meaningful gifts without shopping stress. Head back to downtown Kyoto and visit Nishiki Market - Kyoto’s “kitchen,” - perfect for sampling snacks, sweets, and local specialties. Best enjoyed as a tasting stroll rather than a full meal. You can find numerous traditional Japanese knife shops in this area as well. End your sightseeing at Nijo Castle before having dinner at Menbaka Fire Ramen, an unforgettable experience.
