Spain: Madrid Barcelona Segovia and Toledo

Spain is one of my favorite countries to visit in Europe! From the time I was a young girl, I have traveled on numerous occasions to Spain to learn about my Spanish heritage. Spain is very welcoming and makes you feel like you are home. Spain offers something different, whether you are a history buff, a foodie or traveling as a family or a solo traveler. 

 Madrid, Barcelona,Toledo and Segovia

Madrid is a great city to stay for several days and take day trips to nearby cities. It is majestic! In Madrid, take a private driver and guide to see the Palacio Real (the Royal Palace), the Prado Museum to see works by Goya and Velasquez, stroll down to the El Retiro Park (one of the largest parks in the city) and practice your rowing skills by renting a boat and learn to make paella with a cooking class in a local home. Maybe taking a flamenco class is in your horizon! You can take a day or half day trips to Segovia, Toledo and Avila, either by rail or private tour.

Sights to see in Barcelona is the Placa Catalunya, La Pedrera and Las Ramblas. Visit the old town and the Gothic Quarter with a walking tour and take a vermouth tasting tour, as Barcelona has many vermouth bars. My favorite hotels in Spain are Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, and Iberostar Hotels.

What foods or drink should you try?

Food is very important to the people in Spain. It is a time to get together with family and friends. Typical spanish foods are the paella, tortilla, gazpacho and croquettes, usually in tapas style.  Churros and chocolate is a late night tradition, so make sure this is on you list of foods to try.

A popular drink in the summertime is " Tinto de Verano" meaning summer red wine.  This is a glass of red wine the lemon soda, very similar to a spritz.  Cava is also very popular, which is sparkling wine.  It can be drank by itself or make some delicious sangria with cava.  For fine dining, Spain has over 220 Michelin starred restaurants making this a foodie's destination dream!  

When is the best time to visit Spain?

The best time to visit Spain is in the spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). It has good weather and there are fewer crowds.  The winter months are very cold and the summer months of July and August are extremely hot and full of visitors.  It should be noted that many Spaniards take a month long vacation during August, therefore many stores,restaurants or businesses are closed during this time.
