Italy: Lake Como Bellagio Varenna Tremezzo

It is always the right time to visit Italy, especially the Lake Como area. Lake Como is the third largest lake and sits at the foot of the Alps. It is among the most romantic and picturesque scenery in the world and is home to some of the most stunning views. It is perfect for a destination wedding and honeymoon, an anniversary celebration, a romantic getaway and even a family vacation.   

Como, Bellagio, Tremezzo, Varenna

Como’s city center is full of little streets with great shops and family owned restaurants. You can opt to take a ferry to Bellagio, known as the Pearl of Lake Como, Tremezzo and Varenna. These towns are known for their cobbled streets lined with colorful houses and beautiful views.

In Bellagio, visit Salita Serbolleni. It is their most famous street and perfect dining Al fresco, shopping or a still. Varenna is one of the most typical and peaceful towns on the lake. Villa Monastero and Riva Grande are two sights that cannot be missed. Across the lake is Tremezzo, known for Villa Balbianello, where Star Wars and Casino Royale were filmed. Many couples choose Villa Balbianello for their wedding destination location.

My recommendation for an ultimate experience is to charter a private boat for the day, stopping at each village at your leisure, having lunch overlooking the lake and enjoying a champagne cocktail on your return sail to your hotel or private villa. It will be magical.

What is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is April - June and September - October when the weather is mild and not too many people. The summer months are very hot and humid and very crowded with tourists.

What foods or drinks should you try?

Typical foods in Lake Como are Missoltino, a sun-dried fish; Pizzoccheri, buckwheat pasta; pan de como, Como’s signature bread; and cutizza, nicknamed the “cake of the poor” - a type of pancake. Make sure to order an aperitif watching the sunset before dinner.
