Alaska by Sea: My Personal Journey through Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, and British Columbia with Royal Caribbean

As a travel advisor passionate about curating unforgettable journeys, I believe there's no better way to witness the raw, unspoiled beauty of Alaska than by sea. My recent Royal Caribbean cruise through Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, and British Columbia was nothing short of awe-inspiring—and it deepened my ability to guide clients through one of the most majestic destinations in the world. From the moment we set sail, the experience was a perfect balance of luxury, adventure, and nature. Sailing through the Inside Passage, I quickly realized that this wasn’t just a cruise—it was an immersion into a world where glaciers calve before your eyes, eagles soar overhead, and charming frontier towns welcome you with open arms.

Our first stop was Sitka—a town that completely surprised me. Nestled between the mountains and sea, it blends Alaskan wilderness with Russian heritage in the most unique way. I explored Sitka National Historical Park, walking peaceful trails under towering spruce and hemlock trees. Totem poles dot the landscape, and bald eagles soar freely overhead. For clients looking to mix culture with outdoor adventure, Sitka is ideal. Whether it’s sea kayaking, hiking to Castle Hill, or visiting the Alaska Raptor Center, there’s a rich blend of education and excitement. I recommend arriving with your camera ready—wildlife is everywhere, and the views are postcard-worthy.

Skagway transports you back to the late 1800s, when gold fever ran wild and rugged adventurers filled the streets. As a history lover, I was thrilled to walk the boardwalks of this preserved boom town. One of the highlights was the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad—a breathtaking train ride that climbs high into the mountains, retracing the path of the gold prospectors. From a travel advisor’s perspective, Skagway is one of the best ports for customizable excursions. Whether you're into history, nature, or adrenaline, there’s something for everyone—from zip-lining and dog sledding to brewery tours and glacier hikes. For my clients, I suggest booking shore excursions early, especially the train ride—it sells out quickly and is absolutely worth it.Juneau: Glaciers, Whales, and Alaskan Soul.

Juneau was, hands down, a standout of the entire trip. Surrounded by water, mountains, and ice, Alaska’s capital is accessible only by sea or air, which adds to its remote magic. We began with a visit to Mendenhall Glacier, where I hiked the short but rewarding trail to Nugget Falls. The scale of the glacier and the roar of the falls are impossible to describe—they must be experienced. But it was our whale-watching tour that truly took my breath away. We saw humpback whales bubble-net feeding just yards from our boat. As a travel advisor, I always strive to help clients experience the emotional “wow” moments of travel—and this was certainly one of them.Juneau also offers excellent shopping, delicious seafood (yes, the crab is worth it!), and fun local experiences like panning for gold or visiting the Alaskan Brewing Co. I advise layering up in Juneau—weather shifts quickly, and you’ll want to be prepared for everything from sun to drizzle to glacier-cool breezes.British Columbia: Victoria’s Grace and Coastal Charm.

Our final stop before returning to port was Victoria, British Columbia—a beautiful contrast to the rugged Alaskan wilderness. With its manicured gardens, charming shops, and British-influenced architecture, Victoria felt like stepping into a storybook. We visited the world-famous Butchart Gardens, a paradise of blooms and fountains unlike anything else on the trip. It’s a great choice for travelers wanting a quieter day ashore. Afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel is another client favorite I now personally recommend. For those seeking more activity, bike tours and harbor kayaking are also excellent options.Victoria’s accessibility and walkability make it ideal for a more relaxed port day, and it provides a lovely farewell to an adventurous cruise.

Having sailed this itinerary myself, I can confidently offer insider tips on what to pack, which excursions to prioritize, and how to make the most of your time both onboard and onshore. I’ve navigated early mornings, last-minute changes in weather, and choosing the best viewing spots for wildlife—so you don’t have to learn the hard way.

And now, I’m ready to help you experience it all—your way.
