I first discovered cruising in 1994, when my mom treated me to a graduation trip to the Bahamas aboard the Big Red Boat. I’ll never forget stepping onto that floating palace for the very first time. It felt like another world—endless restaurants, lively entertainment, shore excursions, and more activities than I ever imagined. That first experience planted the seed of a lifelong love for cruising.Years later, I returned to the sea aboard the Disney Magic—this time as a married mom with three young children. Experiencing the magic of a cruise through their eyes was unforgettable. I’ll always remember the joy on their faces when they met Mickey and Minnie up close, or the excitement of discovering kids’ clubs that offered so much more than childcare. From scavenger hunts and storytimes to dance parties and creative play, they were immersed in unforgettable experiences, while my husband and I enjoyed some time to relax and reconnect. What made that trip even more special was sharing it with my mom and stepdad. Cruising together as three generations showed me how effortlessly a ship brings everyone’s interests together. During the day, we each found our own favorite activities—my kids loving the kids’ clubs, my parents enjoying enrichment and leisure, and my husband and I slipping into quiet moments of relaxation. Yet every evening we gathered for a family dinner, sharing stories from our day, then heading to shows or live entertainment. Sometimes we brought the kids along, other times they happily stayed in the clubs (no guilt, because they loved it so much!), while the adults enjoyed comedy, music, or a late-night cocktail. It was the perfect balance of “me time” and “together time”—a gift that cruising uniquely provides. For me, cruising has always been about convenience and discovery. You can visit multiple destinations without the stress of packing and unpacking again and again. There’s no need to juggle restaurant reservations in different cities, coordinate complex transportation, or worry about missing out on must-see attractions. Onboard, everything is in one place—gourmet dining, world-class entertainment, enriching cultural programs, and even guest speakers and demonstrations that bring the traditions of your destination to life. Then, when you step off the ship, excursions take you directly into the heart of a new place.Cruising has also given me the chance to see places I once thought were out of reach. Growing up, even the thought of visiting an island seemed exotic and far away. That all changed with cruising. I’ve snorkeled the turquoise waters of Cozumel, swam with stingrays in Grand Cayman, played with monkeys in Roatan, and stood in awe before ancient pyramids. I’ve tasted flavors I never knew existed, and felt the warmth of cultures unlike my own. Perhaps most breathtaking of all, I’ve sailed through Alaska, watching glaciers calve into the sea, learning the stories of the gold rush, and even meeting the sled dogs of the Iditarod—experiences I had only read about in books before.Another gift cruising offers is perspective. We all have dream destinations that we imagine will be everything we hope for. But sometimes, when you finally visit, the reality doesn’t match the picture in your mind. Cruising gives you the opportunity to sample a destination before committing to an entire vacation there. On one voyage, I finally visited a place I’d long dreamed about, only to realize it wasn’t for me. And that was okay—because I had an entire ship, other destinations, and new adventures waiting for me the very next day.Over the years, I’ve come to believe that cruising truly has something for everyone—no matter your age or stage of life. For families, it’s a seamless way to combine fun for the kids with relaxation for the parents. For couples, it’s a romantic way to reconnect while seeing the world together. For solo travelers, it offers a welcoming community and the chance to explore without feeling alone. And for multigenerational groups, it’s the perfect way for everyone—grandparents, parents, and kids alike—to create memories together, while still enjoying activities tailored to their own interests. What I love most is that cruising turns travel dreams into realities. Whether you want to relax on a sun-kissed beach, explore ancient ruins, discover new cuisines, or witness the raw beauty of nature, a cruise brings the world to you in a way that is effortless, enriching, and unforgettable.
