COUNTRIES VISITED:At Sea, Greece, Italy, Turkey
PLACES VISITED:Civitavecchia, Ephesus, Mediterranean Sea, Mykonos, Naples, Santorini
SUGGESTED DURATION:7 Days
My wife and I sailed from Rome on the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas and began our journey with a relaxing day at sea, settling in and exploring the ship. Our first stop was Santorini, where we wandered through the cliff-side villages, took in the caldera views, and enjoyed the island’s incredible scenery. We then visited Kusadasi, where we toured the ancient city of Ephesus and explored its beautifully preserved ruins. After that, we spent a wonderful day in Mykonos, strolling through the winding white-washed streets and taking in the island’s charming atmosphere. Another peaceful sea day gave us time to unwind before we arrived in Naples, where we explored the city’s history and sampled unforgettable Italian cuisine. The cruise ended back in Rome, wrapping up an amazing journey through the Greek Isles together.

Wine Tasting
We experienced Santorini’s Cycladic charm on a 3.5-hour tour that took us through Megalochori, Pyrgos, and the Canava estate. We traveled along dramatic caldera cliffs to Megalochori, where we walked narrow lanes past historic mansions carved into volcanic rock. We continued to Pyrgos, perched at the island’s highest point, and explored its traditional Cycladic architecture and neoclassical touches on a guided walk through the former capital. At the family-owned Canava estate, we toured the distillery and museum, saw the barrel maker’s workshop, and learned how spirits had been crafted there since the 1970s. Recreated family rooms showed everyday island life, and we tasted ouzo, raki, and pine-infused mastika. We ended the tour with free time in Fira before returning to Athinios port for the tender back to the ship.

Historical City of Ephesus
We headed straight to the ancient city of Ephesus, a 20-minute drive from the port. The House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John hold historical import as well as the traditional brick and stone architecture of the ancient near east. And of course, you can see the one remaining column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Selfie Tour of Mykonos
We explored a quieter side of Mykonos on a guided walking tour through the charming, mostly car-free streets of the island’s capital. We passed whitewashed houses and stylish boutiques before visiting the famous Church of Panagia Paraportiani, a unique complex of five connected churches. We also saw Mykonos’ iconic hillside windmills, once used to grind wheat and now standing as one of the island’s most recognizable photo spots.
