“Jessica planned one of the most meaningful trips of my life.” I’ve been fortunate to travel with Jessica to many beautiful places, but our trip to Italy... Read More >
COUNTRIES VISITED:New York
PLACES VISITED:New York City
SUGGESTED DURATION:4 Days
Getting there: I live in Southeastern Ontario – we drive to Syracuse and take the train to Penn Station. Sit along the right side, and you will travel down along the Hudson River before heading into the City. Where to Stay – Manhattan has everything from the Plaza to a Super 8. Sometimes location is more important than style. You can also drive to New Jersey, stay there and take a train into the City. I don’t know about you, but once I leave a theatre at 11 pm, I am exhausted, and want to crawl into a bed. Making my way to NJ after that is not appealing – but that’s me – you do you. Maybe head out to a bar and watch a drag show after? Why not! Broadway – If there is a particular show or actor you want to see, I strongly suggest getting those tickets ahead of time. I have also been lucky enough to be handed a flyer in Times Square for tix at a reduced same day fee if you visit the box office with that flyer. That’s how I came to see the Tony winning musical Memphis.

Arrive and Relax
Arrival: Get in early afternoon and stretch your legs. Head to Restaurant Row for an early dinner at Becco. Reservations can be made online. The Days are set up for you to stop and wander as you please – the stops are just highlights and suggestions. If the Met isn’t your style – the Guggenheim is close by, or the Frick. Or just take a book and blanket and lay out on Sheep's Meadow for the afternoon.

See the Statue of Liberty from the Ferry
Get up early and take the subway down to the very bottom of Manhattan to the Staten Island Ferry. Get on the ferry and do a round trip! You will see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island – twice! Leave the terminal – Battery Park is on your left. Start up Broadway – visit the Nat. Museum of the American Indian (it’s free and has restrooms). Continue up Broadway to the “Charging Bull”. This is Wall Street – the Financial District. Continue up Broadway to Trinity Church. You are walking toward the 9/11 site, and this is your first stop. The Church was used as place for first responders and volunteers to find respite in the aftermath. Go in, have a seat, breathe in the cool air (be sure to take off your hat!). Don’t miss the cemetery – Alexander Hamilton is buried here. Leave the church, continuing up Broadway to Cortlandt Street, turn left toward the west side. Stop at Eataly – grab a lunch, coffee, water. Head out and continue to the 9/11 memorial and museum.

The Met and Strawberry Fields
Take a cab/subway to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Central Park is next. From The Met, walk across Terrace Drive toward 72nd street on the West Side. You can visit the Central Park Boathouse on the way and rent a rowboat to paddle around if you chose. The Bethesda terrace is beautiful. At 72nd Street you will find Strawberry Fields, and right at the corner of 72nd – that's the Dakota. Next, head down to Sheep's Meadow and across to The Carousel – get on it! Now onto the Zoo. Exit the park – the Plaza Hotel is right across the street. You should be on Broadway now. Head South to the Rockefeller Centre. There’s lots to do here! Wander. Radio City Music Hall is a block away at 50th and 6th. Next, walk over to 45th and 7th Avenue – Times Square. The night is yours to explore - Maybe a Rangers game at the Gardens, take the subway to Yankee Stadium, or another show. Dinner suggestion: Daniel.

Alternate Itinerary
Alternate Itinerary: after the Zoo – take a Taxi to the United Nations on the West Side. Stroll the beautiful Rose Garden and take in a view of the River. When you leave take 42nd Street to Lexington Avenue – look up – this is the Chrysler Building. Keep going down 42nd to Grand Central Station. You will want to explore the architecture inside. Continue along 42nd to 5th Avenue. Now you have a choice – head back toward Central Park and you can visit Rochefeller Centre. Or head South to the Empire State Building.
