Tom Pizanowski Jr. combined his passion for active travel and cultural immersion on an unforgettable Backroads Adventure Travel cycling journey paired with an AmaWaterways Rhine River cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. First day of cycling and boarding the ship
I pedaled into the Black Forest as morning mist still clung to the pines, the air cool, clean, and scented with earth and spruce. The road wound gently through storybook villages, past half-timbered houses and quiet streams that mirrored the sky. Each climb rewarded me with sweeping views of rolling hills and dense forest canopy, and every descent felt like flying. Cowbells echoed in the distance, and café stops offered strong coffee and flaky pastries that tasted earned. By afternoon, my legs were pleasantly tired and my spirit fully alive, that perfect balance only a great ride delivers. From forest trails to riverbanks, the transition felt seamless. I rolled my bike to the pier and caught my first glimpse of the AmaViola, elegant and waiting. Stepping aboard was like exhaling—cool linens, polished wood, and a welcoming crew. As the lines were cast off, the river began to glide beneath us, and I traded cycling shoes for a glass of wine on deck, watching the landscape drift by.

Adventure hadn’t ended; it had simply shifted pace, from the rhythm of pedals to the gentle flow of
the river.

20 mile bike ride through vineyards and villages
The morning mist still clung to the Vosges foothills as I rolled my bike onto the Route des Vins. Rows of vines stretched in perfect lines, their leaves whispering as I passed, heavy with promise. Each village felt like a pause in time—Eguisheim’s cobbled rings, Riquewihr’s timbered houses glowing in pastel hues, geraniums spilling from every window box. Church bells marked the hours, not the miles. I stopped for water that turned into a sip of Riesling, shared with a vintner who smiled as if we were old friends. The road rose gently, then rewarded me with sweeping views of castles perched above the vines. By afternoon, my legs ached pleasantly, my jersey scented with sun and grapes. I coasted into the next village in the afternoon knowing this was a journey measured not in distance, but in moments savored.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Riding through countless vineyards for a far as the eye could see.
DAY3
Strasbourg
Close Day
France to Germany
At dawn, the Strasbourg region feels like it belongs only to cyclists. I roll out along the canal, the air cool and faintly scented with wet grass and bread baking in distant villages. Vineyards stretch toward the Vosges, their rows glowing softly as the sun lifts. Storks perch on rooftops, unbothered by the quiet whir of tires. Each pedal stroke carries me past half-timbered houses, locks opening on the Ill River, and fields where morning mist clings like a secret. By late morning, café stops appear, espresso and kougelhopf restoring both legs and spirit. In the afternoon, I trade cleats for walking shoes and enter Strasbourg on foot. The Grande Île unfolds slowly: the cathedral’s spire rising like lace against the sky, cobblestones warm underfoot, canals reflecting pastel façades in Petite France. I wander from shaded squares to lively terraces, letting church bells mark the hours. As evening approaches, the city feels intimate, a perfect counterpoint to the open roads of earlier.

18 mile Bike ride to Heidelberg and a cuckoo clock
I hopped on my bike in Ludwigshafen, the Rhine stretching out beside me, morning air cool and fresh. The city faded behind me, replaced by quiet country roads, barges drifting lazily on the river, and little villages popping up along the way. My legs warmed as I cruised the gentle hills toward Heidelberg, taking it all in—the bakeries smelling amazing, other cyclists giving friendly nods, the sun climbing higher. Finally, I rolled into Heidelberg, the Old Bridge and the castle coming into view. Eighteen miles later, I stopped by the river, tired but grinning, happy for a ride that was simple, peaceful, and exactly what I needed. The boat docked in Rudsheim and that is were I bought my authentic German Cuckoo Clock.

DAY5
Lahnstein
Close Day
Rhine Gorge, or the Upper Middle Rhine Valley
Pedaling along the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, I felt the river’s rhythm mirror my own heartbeat. Vine-clad hills rose steeply on either side, and the scent of ripening grapes mingled with the crisp morning air. Castles crowned every hilltop—some proud and intact, others weathered ruins whispering centuries of tales. I paused at one perched above the river, its stone walls glowing in golden light, imagining knights and courtly banquets long past. Each bend revealed another fortress, each village a story waiting to be discovered. The gentle hum of tires on cobblestones became a meditation, the river sparkling beside me. By sunset, the Rhine reflected a tapestry of towers and turrets, my legs tired but my spirit soaring, having pedaled not just through valleys, but through history itself.
HIGHLIGHTS:
More castles than you can count
DAY6
Cologne
Close Day
Brewpub lunch
Rain slicked streets glimmered under the gray Cologne sky, and today my bike sat unused. Instead, I wandered the city on foot, the soft patter of drizzle keeping the crowds thin. After a hearty lunch at a cozy local brewpub with my fellow cyclists whom braved the rain, I joined a city tour. The guide’s voice mingled with the rain, telling tales of Roman walls, Gothic spires, and the soaring majesty of the cathedral. Narrow alleys and colorful storefronts blurred in the mist, but each corner revealed a small delight: a hidden café, a centuries-old statue, the echo of footsteps on cobblestones. By late afternoon, the rain softened to a gentle drizzle, the Rhine reflecting the city’s lights like molten silver. Cologne felt intimate and alive, a city whose charm didn’t need sunshine to shine.

DAY7
Amsterdam

Canals and more canals
Stepping off the train in Amsterdam, the crisp winter air carried the scent of fresh pastries and damp cobblestones. I wandered along narrow streets lined with gabled houses, their reflections shimmering in the canals. By afternoon, I boarded a small boat for a canal tour, settling into the gentle sway as the city unfolded around me. Bridges arched gracefully overhead, bicycles zipped past, and cyclists waved with cheerful familiarity. The guide shared tales of merchants, painters, and secret courtyards hidden from the bustling streets. Sunlight danced on the water, illuminating centuries-old architecture. Passing under low bridges, I felt the intimacy of the city’s rhythm—quiet yet vibrant. Each turn revealed new perspectives: a flower market, a hidden café, a courtyard garden. As we glided back to the dock, I lingered on the moment, grateful for the calm, magical pulse of Amsterdam’s canals.
