Cancún Beyond the Hotel Zone
Cancún is famous for its Hotel Zone, but some of the best resorts are tucked away just a short drive south, in the mangroves of Puerto Morelos. Here you get all the turquoise-blue water, soft sandy beaches, and world-class service—without the traffic, hustle, and high-rise crowds. Two of my favorite stays were at Margaritaville Island Reserve and Secrets Riviera Cancún Resort & Spa, and both offered a slice of paradise in their own unique way. Bell service helped arrange every excursion with ease, and the team seemed to genuinely care about how you were spending your day.

One of my favorite memories was waking up early to catch the sunrise. A waiter not only encouraged it but brought us fruit drinks to enjoy while the sky turned every shade of pink and orange. Small details like that made the trip unforgettable.The resort itself is spotless. Drinks are prepared fresh at the bar (no watered-down premade mixes), and the beach is carefully maintained each morning, with seaweed cleared and sand raked smooth. It’s the kind of place where you feel both pampered and relaxed, never rushed. Secrets Riviera Cancún Resort & SpaThis adults-only boutique resort quickly became one of my favorite vacations with my husband. Tucked into the mangroves, Secrets offers seclusion and serenity while still being close enough to explore Cancún. The service here is unmatched—I’ll never forget sitting by the pool when my drink melted, only for someone to walk right into the pool to refresh it.

What makes Secrets even more special is its connection to Breathless Riviera Cancún. Guests at Secrets get full access to Breathless—its dining venues, entertainment, and lively pools—while still having the ability to retreat back to the calm, upscale atmosphere of Secrets. Breathless guests don’t have access to Secrets, which makes Secrets feel like a true private escape.

We loved the best of both worlds: being able to explore Breathless for extra variety, then returning to Secrets for tranquility. In fact, the food at Rosewater was so incredible, and the calm pool so relaxing, that we often chose to stay put—because sometimes you just can’t top perfection.
