Stepping foot on Icelandic soil is like stepping on another planet. Where glacial landscapes meet volcanic landscapes, waterfalls crash beside black sand beaches, and the night skies come alive with brilliant auroras. I have never felt so curious, inspired and awestruck as I have in Iceland. The raw beauty of this island is otherworldly and adventure awaits you at every turn.
One of Iceland's most famous stops is the Blue Lagoon, and I can tell you, after a long flight, it's worth a stop to soak in its milky blue waters and let your skin rejuvenate in the soothing silica, algae, and minerals it provides. The water averages around 37–39°C (98–102°F), and the contrast between the warm, steaming water and the often chilly Icelandic air makes for an incredibly relaxing experience. Although the Blue Lagoon is Iceland's most iconic geothermal spa, other natural hot springs like Mývatn Nature Baths and Seljavallalaug are also just as relaxing and invigorating.
Another iconic Iceland sight is the Hallgrimskirkja Church. A peaceful stroll down the main shopping street in Reykjavik, Skolavordustigur Street, brings you to this stunning, and towering church. It is the tallest building in Iceland, and the views at the top are absolutely breathtaking. Especially if it's a clear day, I would always recommend purchasing a ticket to reach the top of the tower to see Reykjavik from the sky. It's such a colorful and beautiful city along the coast.
Iceland offers one of the world's best road trips: Ring Road (Route 1). It circles the entire island and is the main highway, spanning 821 miles (1322 kilometers). The experience of driving the Ring Road will show you the full scope of what Iceland has to offer while providing the ultimate adventure. A fast paced drive, hitting the major stops can take about 7 days, but if you're ready for a more immersive and relaxed road trip, plan for about 10-14 days. Taking in the power Iceland has to offer via the Ring Road is truly unforgettable.
One of the major stops that I loved, are the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. Truly powerful waterfalls you can view from afar, or up as close as walking behind the impressive falling water. Please note: you will get wet! But it's worth it, I promise.
Another stop the Ring Road offers that left me in awe, is the Sólheimajökull Glacier. Iceland is known as the land of Fire and Ice, and a hike, or ice climbing on a glacier is an absolute bucket list moment. Joining a tour is the best way to be able to experience this glacier to the fullest, using crampons and ice axes. The contrast of the white ice, black volcanic ash and bright blue crevasses is remarkable. Learning about Iceland's glacial landscape, while on a glacier is an experience that sits with you in a lasting and impressionable way.
Iceland offers so many bucket list moments, that you might check off most of your list! Another such item is snorkeling or diving in the Silfra Fissure. The Silfra Fissure is the only place on earth that you can swim between two tectonic plates, the North American and Eurasian plates. The most extraordinary crystal-clear, blue waters (3rd clearest in the world), are unbelievable to see, and snorkeling in the near freezing temperatures almost feels like a dreamland. The dry suits you wear to snorkel or dive in the fissure keep you surprisingly warm, so you can truly focus on the beauty of the dramatic underwater geology.
My favorite Iceland bucket list moment however, are the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). It is one of the most magical experiences you can have. The way the lights dance across the sky is a mesmerizing sight to behold. Iceland offers easily accessible locations to view these dynamic and if you're lucky, vivid lights. Iceland is an absolute bucket list destination, with exquisite, almost surreal landscapes and adventure opportunities that are truly unmatched.
