Tulum offers plenty of stunning coastal views with an ocean breeze that is intoxicating. It's a place that you want to stay and watch the ocean forever. Tulum was one of the very last cities that was inhabited by the Mayan people, and a buzzing hub of goods and wealth; exporting jade and obsidian. Today, Tulum provides a plethora of beach resorts from minimalist, to all-inclusive, to eco-conscious luxury.
You will feel a connection to nature and history while relaxing, or exploring the coastal charm of Tulum, that will stay with you for a lifetime. Tulum provides a playful blend of laid-back luxury and bohemian charm, especially along the beach road where quaint, boutique hotels, open-air restaurants (so yummy), and yoga studios thrive amid the jungle.
One of Tulum's most notable highlights is the Tulum Ruins, set atop a cliff above the Caribbean Sea. The setting of the turquoise waters and ancient temples, makes the site truly memorable. Moving a little more inland, cenotes like Gran Cenote and Cenote Calavera provide incredible opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in pristine, crystal-clear waters. An experience I will never forget. Being able to snorkel into a cave, not knowing what is coming the further you snorkel is thrilling, in every sense of the word. Downtown Tulum offers a local, more relaxed vibe with the most delicious restaurants. The food is not to be overlooked while in Tulum, which is more centered around organic, locally sourced ingredients.
The further north you move toward Playa del Carmen, you come across Xcaret Park which is one of the eco-parks around Riviera Maya and is not to be missed. There are underground rivers to snorkel and swim in, a butterfly pavilion, a Coral Reef Aquarium, Mexican Folk Art Museum and the "Bridge to Paradise" Mexican cemetery, a walk that is truly special and deeply moving, among other attractions.
About an hour's drive north of Tulum is Playa del Carmen, another favorite city of mine in Mexico's Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen delivers on the energy! While Tulum is easy-going, Playa del Carmen is playful and lively, drawing each and every type of traveler to the hub of the city, La Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue). Playa del Carmen offers every type of accomodation, for every type of traveler. From budget friendly, to all-inclusive, to beachfront luxury.
My favorite part of Playa del Carmen is the food, especially the Yucatán-style tacos, so, so good! Street food stalls abound and you cannot go wrong with any option, especially any of the local favorites such as: cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork), elotes (grilled corn with chili and lime, one of my favorites), and tamarind-flavored aguas frescas (Mexican drink made with tamarind, water and sugar, very refreshing).
One of the most impressive sights I have seen in my travels is Chichén Itzá. Almost a three hour drive from Tulum, or a little over two hours from Playa del Carmen, Chichén Itzá is an incredible sight to behold. UNESCO has named Chichén Itzá one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, and I can promise it does not disappoint. These Mayan Ruins are magnificent and spectacular. There are truly not enough adjectives to describe how incredible this archeological site is.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural discovery, Mexico's Riviera Maya region has something to offer every type of traveler.
