Ireland has long been a dream destination for many travelers, but experiencing it firsthand as a travel advisor offers a completely different perspective. Recently, I traveled across Ireland on a familiarization (FAM) trip designed to experience the country the same way my clients do. My goal was simple: walk the streets, visit the hotels, explore the countryside, and truly understand what makes Ireland such a meaningful destination.
My journey began in Dublin, where I spent several days touring hotels throughout the city center. One thing that stood out immediately was how Irish hotels thoughtfully weave history into the guest experience. Some incorporate original architectural elements from centuries-old buildings, while others highlight local artists or reference the building’s past through restaurant names and design details. These touches transform a hotel stay into part of the destination itself.
A key part of this trip involved understanding how travelers move throughout the country. Transportation, timing, and daily pacing are all important pieces of building a well-balanced itinerary. Experiencing different travel methods firsthand helps me guide my clients toward options that match their comfort level and travel style.
One of the most memorable transitions during the trip was traveling west toward Galway and the Wild Atlantic Way. Dublin feels historic and educational, while Galway has a vibrant coastal energy. Colorful storefronts, lively pubs filled with music, and views of Galway Bay create a welcoming atmosphere that travelers quickly fall in love with.
Along the Wild Atlantic Way, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Rolling green hills, stone fences stretching across the countryside, and sweeping Atlantic views make it easy to see why this route is one of Ireland’s most celebrated travel experiences.
Exploring Ireland’s castles was another highlight of the trip. These historic properties give travelers the opportunity to experience Ireland’s past while enjoying modern comfort and hospitality. During my visit to Ashford Castle, I experienced firsthand how a centuries-old fortress has been transformed into one of Ireland’s most iconic luxury hotels. Walking the grounds and surrounding countryside made it clear why castle stays are such a memorable part of an Irish itinerary.
Nearby, Abbeyglen Castle in Clifden offers a charming and intimate castle stay overlooking the Twelve Bens mountains, while Ballynahinch Castle sits along a peaceful river in the heart of Connemara. Each property offers its own atmosphere, from grand historic luxury to quiet countryside elegance.
Of course, food is another memorable part of the Irish experience. One of my biggest surprises was how memorable the simplest meals could be. Hearty soups, rich cheeses, freshly baked brown bread, and incredible butter quickly became some of my favorite discoveries.
One unexpected moment perfectly captured the spirit of Ireland. While visiting the countryside, I had the chance to hold a baby lamb. It was one of those simple travel moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Trips like this allow me to go beyond photos and online reviews. I get to see how hotels operate, how tours are conducted, and how destinations truly feel once you arrive. That firsthand knowledge allows me to design itineraries that are thoughtful, realistic, and tailored to each traveler.
Ireland is filled with history, beauty, warmth, and unforgettable experiences. After exploring it personally, I am even more excited to help my clients discover their own version of Ireland, whether that includes historic cities, vibrant coastal towns, scenic countryside drives, or unforgettable castle stays.
