Our adventure began not with a lengthy drive, but with a gentle landing at the Charlottetown airport. The moment we stepped into the crisp, salt laced air, I knew our four night escape to Prince Edward Island had to be perfectly curated. This was a concentrated dose of romance, a late September vow to slow down, lean into the island's gentle rhythm, and fully immerse ourselves in what became an unforgettable culinary tour celebrating my 40th birthday.
Our first night was spent exploring downtown Charlottetown on foot, soaking up the historic charm and the relaxed evening atmosphere. From there, our journey took us westward. We made a charming detour to Summerside, where we indulged in scoops of creamy heaven at Holman's Ice Cream Parlour. Just around the corner, at Spinnaker's Landing, we found a perfect, lasting souvenir, a beautiful red sea glass necklace at a shop called Shoreline Design. A special moment was finding out that the lovely woman in the shop was actually the one that found that rare piece of sea glass.
From Summerside, our drive turned toward the scenic coast. We headed north to Thunder Cove Beach to explore its unique sandstone caves, feeling the spray of the ocean and breathing the wild, invigorating air. Heading east along the coast towards Bay Fortune, our journey was blissfully interrupted by a truly quintessential PEI travel moment, a stop at The Seafood Shack. This was a find, a hidden gem I'd researched, serving incredible fare right out of a gas station location. It confirmed a key island truth, the best food is often found in the most unexpected places. We celebrated the discovery with an authentic coastal lunch, devouring amazing lobster rolls and creamy chowder that perfectly powered our final stretch to the eastern tip.
We then reached the sheer, spectacular luxury of Chef Michael Smith's The Inn at Bay Fortune. This wasn't just a place to sleep for a few nights, it was a destination in itself, a warm embrace. From the moment we checked in, the staff, with their genuine warmth and easy smiles, made us feel less like guests and more like family returning home. The grounds were an autumnal dream, and the Fortune Bay views offered a constant, calming backdrop.
Our dedication to the island's food scene was perhaps best demonstrated on our third day. We drove all the way back to Charlottetown specifically for a high-profile culinary experience at Ada Culinary Studio. This special private event featured a collaboration between Chef Adam Loo and Top Chef Canada finalist Chef Mark Singson, who put on a unique pop-up dinner for only about thirty guests. The opportunity to witness such talented chefs’ passion up close while savoring an innovative menu felt like a backstage pass to the height of PEI’s vibrant food culture.
Between our organized dining events, we nourished our souls with the island’s untouched beauty. We ventured to the rugged North Coast, where the landscape spoke of quiet, windswept drama. We found a small, authentic tuna fishing village and watched the boats bob on the horizon, before finding a stretch of beach that went on for what felt like endless kilometers, completely deserted. For hours, we were the only humans there, the only footprints in the red sand belonging to us and the occasional loyal canine companion. That feeling of solitude, just the sound of the waves and the company of my husband.
The glorious highlight of our trip, however, was reserved for our final night, the legendary Fireworks Feast. This multi course dining event transcends a typical dinner; it’s a full throttle celebration of local bounty, where wood-fired culinary magic meets communal joy. The food was, simply put, out of this world. We indulged in more fresh seafood and oysters than I could ever count though I did keep a running tally and proudly devoured 23 of those briny jewels myself! It was the perfect, celebratory crescendo before heading home.
The tail end of September proved to be a nearly perfect time for a couples’ trip. We were blessed with beautiful weather, crisp air, golden light, and the gentle hush that falls over the island after the summer crowds depart. However, a few establishments were already shuttering their doors for the season, a subtle reminder that the island begins to hibernate in the fall.
As a final, essential stop on our way to the airport, we visited Ada Culinary Studio one last time to pick up a box of Chef Adam Loo's fresh donuts, allowing us to take a sweet taste of PEI home with us. This trip wasn't just a vacation, it was a sensory symphony composed of salt air, wood smoke, shucked oysters, and the simple beauty of two sets of footsteps in the sand. It re-centered us, fed us, and proved that a true connection is best shared over an incredible meal in a beautiful, faraway place. It was the perfect blend of luxury and natural simplicity, perfectly packed into four memorable nights, a memory we will forever savor.
