About Me

Florida has the most perfect beaches!
Florida has the most perfect beaches!

Florida lies in the southeastern corner of the United States, mostly on a peninsula flanked by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. It also includes a panhandle extending westward along the Gulf, bordering Alabama and Georgia. The state’s total area is about 58,560 square miles (151,670 km²), making it the 26th-largest U.S. state by area. Florida Department of State+2Much of Florida is flat and low-lying. Its highest point, Britton Hill in Walton County, reaches just 345 feet (105 m) above sea level — the lowest “high point” of any U.S. state. The state’s geology is dominated by limestone and karst topography, with underground aquifers, sinkholes, caves, and springs. Historically, much of southern Florida was wetlands and marsh. Over time, extensive drainage, canal building, and land infill altered its water systems and hydrology (especially around the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, and coastal zones).  Indigenous peoples lived in Florida for thousands of years before European contact. Tribes such as the Apalachee, Calusa, Tocobaga, and others occupied different parts of the region. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León made the first recorded European landing in Florida. Spanish colonial control (with interruptions) continued over the centuries.Over time, Florida changed hands among European powers (notably Spain and Britain) before being transferred to U.S. control under the Adams–Onís Treaty (1819). Florida Department of State+3In the early 19th century, conflicts known as the Seminole Wars occurred, as the U.S. sought to force Native Americans westward. Florida officially became the 27th U.S. state on March 3, 1845. During the Civil War, Florida seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy, serving as a supplier of goods and food to the Confederate war effort. The early economy was based on agriculture (small farms, plantations, cattle, citrus), naval stores (tar, pitch, turpentine), cattle, timber, and later phosphate mining (after discovery in the late 1800s). During and after World War II, Florida’s mild climate, strategic location, and ability to host military bases spurred growth in population, infrastructure, and new industries (e.g. aerospace, tourism, real estate) — launching it into the Sun Belt boom.  Climate change & sea-level rise Because much of Florida is at or near sea level, rising seas threaten coastal communities, infrastructure, freshwater supplies (saltwater intrusion), and ecosystems.Storm intensity is projected to increase, making hurricanes and extreme rainfall events more damaging.Water management & ecosystem restoration Restoring natural hydrology in South Florida (Everglades, water flow from Lake Okeechobee) is a multi-decade, expensive, politically complex effort.Balancing urban development and water quality (nutrients runoff, pollution) is ongoing.Growth & infrastructure pressures Rapid population growth (Florida gains thousands of new residents daily) demands expanded housing, roads, utilities, schools, and health services.Transportation congestion, urban sprawl, and inequitable infrastructure access are concerns.Economic inequality & job quality A significant portion of employment is in tourism, hospitality, and service sectors, where wages may be lower and unpredictable.Ensuring equitable prosperity across regions — from urban centers to rural and panhandle counties — is a complex policy challenge.  Environmental conservation & habitat loss Urbanization and development encroach on sensitive habitats (mangroves, wetlands, marshes).Species at risk (e.g. Florida panther, manatees, sea turtles) face challenges from habitat fragmentation, pollution, and climate changes.Political polarization & governance Florida’s role as a political battleground (e.g. in presidential elections) brings national attention and local tension.Managing diverse constituencies — from retirees, new migrants, immigrant communities, rural vs. urban interests — complicates governance.  Florida is more than a tourist haven or a sunny retirement destination. It plays several crucial roles:Strategic gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, influencing trade, migration, and diplomacy.Population engine: As one of the fastest-growing states, its demographic trends (aging, diversity, migration) influence national patterns.Economic powerhouse: Its scale, diversity, and integration into global networks make Florida a major contributor to U.S. GDP and global economics.Laboratory for climate adaptation: Florida’s exposure to sea-level rise, intense storms, water management issues, and ecosystem fragility situates it at the forefront of environmental innovation and policy.Cultural crossroads: It reflects a fusion of many traditions — Latin American, Caribbean, African American, Indigenous, European — contributing to dynamic arts, cuisine, music, and social transformation.
