Spending Christmas in Belgium was a dream come true for our family. From the moment we touched down in Brussels, the festive atmosphere was infectious. Each day brought new surprises and gorgeous sights. If you’ve ever thought about visiting Belgium during the holidays, here’s our week-long itinerary—a mix of bustling cities, serene countryside, and charming towns.
Day 1: Brussels – Festive Lights and Belgian Delights
Our trip began in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The Grand Place’s towering Christmas tree and glittering lights were breathtaking—like walking into a postcard. We explored a nearby Christmas market, indulging in waffles and picking up handmade ornaments. Dinner at a cozy brasserie featured moules-frites and local beer.
Day 2: Waterloo – Stepping into History
The next morning, we drove to Waterloo, the famous battlefield where Napoleon met his defeat. The Memorial 1815 museum and its interactive exhibits captivated even the kids. Climbing the Lion’s Mound provided panoramic views of the historic fields.
Day 3: Ghent – A Fairytale City
Ghent’s canals and medieval architecture felt straight out of a storybook. We explored Gravensteen Castle and warmed up with stoverij, a hearty beef stew. The Christmas market offered speculoos cookies that quickly became a family favorite.
Day 4: Antwerp – Diamonds and Design
Antwerp’s Cathedral of Our Lady and Rubens’ masterpieces impressed us all. A visit to the Diamond District was fascinating, and the MAS Museum provided panoramic city views. Dinner was laid-back with Belgian beer and chocolate mousse.
Day 5: Bastogne and Bouillon – Remembering and Exploring
We visited Bastogne’s Battle of the Bulge Memorial—a moving experience for all of us. Later, in Bouillon, we explored the medieval castle perched above the Semois River. The dungeons and towers were a hit with the kids.
Day 6: Couvin and Chimay – Hidden Gems
In Couvin, the Neptune Caves’ illuminated caverns and boat ride delighted the boys. In Chimay, we sampled Trappist beers and enjoyed a cheese platter, while the kids relaxed on the abbey’s scenic grounds.
Day 7: Brussels and Farewell
Our final day in Brussels included a visit to the futuristic Atomium and last-minute shopping for chocolate and Speculoos spread. A traditional café meal with croquettes and hot chocolate was the perfect sendoff.
Final Thoughts
Belgium’s charm and variety during the holiday season amazed us. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, or just looking for a magical destination, Belgium has something for everyone. If you’re planning a trip, I’d love to help you create your own unforgettable adventure!
