I had the honor to witness a personal interview with Viking founder, Torstein Hagen.

On of the questions he was asked was what the main focus of his cruise line is. He answered that his ships are built with the destination in mind, Viking wants to help their clients to experience the destination to its fullest.

Their ships are small compared to the mega cruise ocean ships, with a maximum of 930 passengers on board. This allows the Viking Ocean Ships to access smaller ports. On board Viking presents enriching lectures about the different destinations their guests will visit. Viking offers a variety of shore excursions in each port, one included at no additional charge. And in the evenings Viking will invite local artists to entertain guests with traditional performances. And Viking Ocean Cruises are adult-only cruises. 

Viking Ocean Ships are known for their gourmet cuisine, which is locally sourced with fresh ingredients.  All the dining venues come with no upcharge, including the specialty restaurants. Beer and wine at lunch and dinner is offered complimentary.

All-inclusive pricing is part of Viking’s philosophy. Viking doesn’t want to nickel and dime their guests and surprise them with a high bill at the end of their cruise. Viking doesn’t offer all the whistles and bells as the large ocean liners. Still, guests have access to a self-service laundry, a thermal suite (which is amazing as I could witness on one of their ship inspections – mineral rich hydrotherapy pool, hot tub, steam rooms and a ‘snow grotto’ to alternate between heat and cold to improve circulation), an outdoor sundeck, a pool, and a gym, and again all this without any additional fees. There is complimentary WiFi throughout the ship. Guests can also enjoy afternoon tea service, along with 24-hour specialty coffee, tea, and bottled water.
