Avalon WaterwaysAbout Me
I had a goal for my trip to France this past November: Experience a river cruise firsthand so I could honestly tell my clients what it’s like. My conclusion? I'm sold- I was able to experience all aspects of traveling along the shores of iconic towns and villages and it did not disappoint. I boarded our Avalon Waterways Artistry II ship in Bordeaux not sure what to expect except great wine. I went from a casual wine drinker to someone who actually understands the history and "swirl" technique behind the region's best vintages. But the wine was just the opening act. What I really had no understanding beforehand, with river cruising isn't just about the river; it's about access. We docked in locations otherwise not accessible; we had a gang plank that lead us to the heart of Bordeaux; we had a day to explore from a dock that had a carnival that provided local entertainment; we made stops for the day, stops overnight. One minute I was touring a historical fort or an oyster farm, the next I was checking UNESCO World Heritage sites off my bucket list or riding an e-bike through wine country. While these were called excursions (meticulously planned and coordinated with locals by Avalon), the process to join in was so smooth and effortless for the participants - we had to do nothing but show up, ready to partake! Whether I was biking to a vineyard or walking ancient streets to an art gallery, every excursion was professionally organized and tailored to every activity level. Life onboard Avalon exceeded my expectations. My room featured floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall sliding glass doors—essentially turning the whole suite into an open-air balcony. Watching the landscape disappear behind us from the comfort of my bed was an experience I won't forget. And the service? Let's just say the staff was so attentive, I barely had to think, let alone lift a finger. I didn't finish one meal, as I was stuffed, and our waitress asked "if you didn't care for your meal, I'm happy to bring you something else!" The menus offered so many choices I often wanted to order "one of everything." Much of the food was locally sourced and was clearly fresh and so delicious! Our Activities director had such a great sense of humor and we all laughed each night as he recounted the fun things of the day and gave us a teaser for the next day. I came back refreshed, culturally enriched, and never once bored. If you’ve been on the fence about a river cruise, let’s talk. I’ve done the "hard work" of testing it out, and I can promise you: it’s worth the hype.
