Amsterdam Day 1: Canals, Coffee & a Bike Ride
Arriving in Amsterdam felt like stepping into a city built on water, brick, and bicycles. Once we settled into our cabins, we finally had the gift of time. After overnight travel, there was no rush and no tight schedule, just space to wander and ease into the city. We spent the afternoon walking along the canals, watching houseboats drift by and locals glide past on bikes with baskets of groceries and flowers. Every turn seemed to reveal a small café, a quiet street, or a bridge that made us stop for a photo. It’s a city that invites you to slow down and simply notice. For those who want more structure, it’s a great day for museums or meaningful places like the Anne Frank House, but even without a plan, Amsterdam is easy to enjoy. By evening, the canal lights reflected on the water, and the whole day helped us relax into the journey ahead.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Visit Rembrandt and other Dutch Masters in the Rijksmuseum
Who else read Anne Frank? With Advance Reservations visit her home
Rent a bike or schedule a Tour by bike!
Hidden Churches? After the Protestant Reformation, public Catholic worship was banned.
Grab a stroopwafel fresh from a stand and then sit down for coffee
Pick any canal-side cafe and enjoy a Brouwerij 't IJ

Kinderdijk: Windmills, Biking & UNESCO Heritage on a Rhine Cruise
Day2 took us into the Dutch countryside and straight into Hans Brinker and the world of Kinderdijk’s windmills and dijks. Hands down one of the most iconic and photogenic stops on this Rhine route. We dock above this UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the site is actually below sea level and we witness the archemedies screws at work, pumping water out of the polder were where 19 historic windmills stand in a silent wind drawn procession against the windy horizons. We chose to explore by e-bike, pedaling through green fields and along quiet paths. The rest of our party chose the cruise by water to view the giants up close, each stopping to learn how they once managed water levels and listening to the soft creak of sails turned by breeze. A blend of gentle activity with cultural curiosity, and by the time we returned to the ship, we felt like we had truly stepped into everyday Dutch life. . .wide open skies included.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Bike along the Kinderdijk Canal
Enjoy the Windmills by Ferry along the Kinderdijk Canal
See an Archimedes screw in action
Step into History of today witnessing a miller in action.

Cologne Day 3: Gothic Cathedral, Old Town Walks & UNESCO Sights on Rhine River Cruise Itinerary
Day 3 in Cologne, Germany was one of those days that you step right into the heart of Europe’s history. We immediately set out on foot to explore the Old Town. The historic center is made up of contrasts, modern plazas lined with cafés and shops alongside centuries-old streets. At the center stage is the Cologne Cathedral. A true masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking inside, the light through stained glass paints the mosaic floor in jewel-tones. Even for someone who’s seen a lot of cathedrals, this one is special... the stain glass removed and saved before the bombings of WWII. Contrast here too with modern replacements of windows not saved during the war. Next on our list was to have the local Kölsch beer. Then, we ventured off the main path to find Claes Oldenburg’s whimsical Dropped Cone sculpture... our own little pilgrimage to the sister of Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis.

Tour the Gothic Cologne Cathedral
Sample Kölsch beer in it's origin
Find dinner in a local restaurant for sauerkraut and sausage

Day 6 we stepped into France via Strasbourg. German influence comes thru in Gothic spires, and timber-framed houses. Winding canals are new on scene and immediately slow you down to pause for photos of the red summer geraniums in window boxes along canals Our guided city tour gave context to its unique blend of French and German influences. For the afternoon we headed into the Alsace wine region, driving along the Alsatian Wine Route. As we passed vineyards and villages we learned about the region’s centuries-old viticulture. We toured a local winery, stepped into the cellar and tasted crisp, aromatic white wines. The winegrower and his family were there to give us the history and techniques.
